Although my bike wasn't flat black, I think it could qualify as an alternative rat bike. Here's the story:
It was a 1977 Honda CB750F2, and it wouldn't start - the rust holes in the gas tank were so large that fuel would pour out before it had a chance to fill the carburetors! The owner was so disgusted he took $125 just to be rid of it.
I took it home and started it, then patched and Kreemed the tank. The epoxy and JB Weld used to patch the tank was pretty extensive, and I knew I could never smooth it enough to repaint the tank its original gloss black. So I sanded and primed a minimal amount, and did a "poured" paint job. I bought small cans of red, blue and yellow enamel. On one side of the tank, I poured blotches of yellow and red paint. Then I poured some of each into a paper cup, and without mixing, poured blotches of the mixture, creating an interesting swirl treatment. The other side of the tank got the same treatment, but with yellow and blue. Did the same for the side covers and the boat tail.
The seat cover was falling apart, so I used it for a pattern to make a new cover using some nice red vinyl from a fabric store. The blacked-out engine got touched up using barbeque grill paint, and the carburetor bodies got blacked out also.
Entire cash expenditure was $198, including a few small replacements from the junk yard. I received more comments on this bike (none negative) than any other I've owned - 32 and counting since 1968. It ran silky smooth, and with the aftermarket headers, put out lots of horsepower - the F models were Honda's hopped-up alternatives to the standard K models, which by the mid-seventies were being eclipsed by the competition. Sold the bike a few months later to a college student whose wife offered to buy him a graduation present with a tight limit on price.
